Boston

Named after Boston Cannery (1883-1900), aka British American Cannery (1900-1923) was built in 1883 in Port Essington by American Gus Holmes. In the early days on the north coast, American people were known among locals as Boston men, which was why the cannery, when owned by Gus Holmes was called Boston Cannery, despite Holmes being Swedish and having lived previously in Iowa, Kansas and primarily Oregon. Cassiar

Named for Cassiar Cannery, which was built in 1903 by Cyrus Peck and Donald Moore. on property purchased by Alfred E. Green in 1889 for $16. In 1910, Ownership transferred to the J.S Macmillan family who operated the cannery continuously for 80 years. Cassiar Cannery holds the title of the longest consecutively operated salmon cannery, packing salmon from 1903 to 1983 without skipping a season. This room was named after Claxton Cannery, which was built at the mouth of Claxton Creek by the Royal Canadian Packing Co. in 1892. This room was named for Cunningham Cannery, which was built in Port Essington in 1883 by Robert Cunningham. The Cunningham room is on the main floor and has two twin beds. North Pacific

Named for North Pacific Cannery, built in 1889 by the North Pacific Canning Company. In 1891, the company accounted for more than one quarter of British Columbia’s total salmon pack, and was the foremost packer of sockeye salmon in the world. North Pacific operated as a cannery until 1968, continued to operate as a maintenance and reduction facility until 1981 and became a historic site in 1985. Port Essington

Named for Port Essington, a cannery town founded in 1871 that at one point was the largest settlement in BC north of Vancouver! Three main canneries operated here. Cunningham, Boston and Ladysmith. When the railroad was built, Port Essington began to slowly close down and by the 1940s, all the canneries were inactive and in the 1960s, the site burned down. Named for Sunnyside Cannery, which was built in 1916 on the Inverness Passage by Gosse-Millerd Co. Ltd. It was a large cannery community, including a school, blacksmith and a church. Named for Nelson Brothers Cannery, which was built in 1913 in Port Edward, by Port Edward Fisheries but not operated until 1918 after World War One.
